In the Philippines, World Interaction Design Day was hosted by Kalibrr.

Spearheaded by Kalibrr’s product design team with support from its creative team, World Interaction Design Day featured two speakers from local tech industries sharing their insights on diversity and inclusion in design.

Designing experiences for the deaf and hard of hearing

The first to share his experiences and expertise was Jordan Deja, an assistant professor at De La Salle University’s College of Computer Studies and the present Center Head at the Complexity and Emerging Technologies (COMET) Research Lab.

Deja primarily discussed the current state of design as it pertains to people who are deaf and hard of hearing, and the strides his company and the tech industry, in general, has made in designing experiences for people with living with such a predicament.

This included how to utilize technology for listeners unfamiliar with sign language to better understand individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing with equipment and software that is being designed to translate sign language and other gestures.

Understanding disabilities when designing for accessibility

On the other hand, Job Buenazedacruz, a designer at Canva, discussed several considerations to make in the effort to design for accessibility.

Specializing in the enhancement of customer experiences in physical and digital environments through design research and human-centered design, Buenazedacruz emphasized how current design practices are generally not as inclusive.

She expounded on how persons with disabilities are as capable as everyone else when they are given the opportunity to participate with society, and how this can come about by taking into consideration the whole spectrum of human abilities, such as the different levels of vision and of mobility, when designing.

Interactions for Inclusion

The gathering did not end after the speakers’ presentations, as they and the rest of the guests and Kalibrr team participated in a panel discussion that, true to this year’s World Interaction Design Day theme, challenged everyone in attendance to consider how language, culture, gender, age, and ability are presently reflected in design, and how they in the design industry can utilize their skills to improve accessibility to products and services for the community at large.

To learn more about World interaction Design Day, visit their official website.

Kalibrr is a technology company that aims to transform how candidates find jobs and how companies hire talent.
