They\u2019re\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/what-ateneo-interns-had-say-about-interns\">the best way for students<\/a>\u00a0to boost their resume, learn real-world skills, and try out job functions they are interested in.<\/p>\n<p id=\"18cc\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Moreover, most 3rd year students in the Philippines are preparing to apply for internships already for June 2018. A lot of 1st and 2nd year college students, and even high school students, are starting to look for internships as well.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3c55\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">As such, I thought of writing a step-by-step guide to help you land an internship, drawn from my experiences in applying and getting internships. But this is not just a guide for any internship\u200a\u2014\u200athis is a guide on how to land one at any startup in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p id=\"07c8\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">But It has over 800 partner businesses already in the Philippines in less than 5 years.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"0a83\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"But_lets_not_limit_it_to_these\"><\/span>But, let\u2019s not limit it to\u00a0these<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"ee40\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">However, since there are a lot of other companies that would be great to work for, but aren\u2019t designed to scale fast, or are \u2018big\u2019 already, I\u2019ll make the definition of a startup more loose for this guide.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bd71\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Hence, I\u2019ll define a startup mainly as:\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">1) Any company that is interesting to work for,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">2) a company that doesn\u2019t have a formal internship program<\/strong>, such as the ones P&amp;G, Unilever, and other big companies have.<\/p>\n<p id=\"69ff\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">So this guide applies to\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">practically any company you find interesting<\/strong>, so long as they don\u2019t have a formal internship program. I say that because companies that have formal internship programs are usually huge, and that a lot of students apply for those internships. So they\u2019re way more competitive, and it\u2019s harder for you to get in.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1061\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The point of this guide is to help you find interesting companies that aren\u2019t aggressively or formally looking for interns, and to help you land an internship in them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9d21\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">When I got my internships at ZAP and Kalibrr, both companies weren\u2019t formally looking for interns, but I was still able to get in. I\u2019m sure other students can do this too, and I\u2019m sure other companies would love to have passionate and talented interns with them.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"816d\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_startups_over_corporations\"><\/span>Why startups over corporations?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"1188\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Some of you might be wondering this, so I\u2019ll answer it here. The Philippines\u2019 number of startups is growing every year, so there are definitely quite a lot of startups to apply to.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8d01\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Also, working at startups (assuming they\u2019re small) gives you closer access to the founders of these startups, and they\u2018re usually incredibly smart and inspiring people.<\/p>\n<p id=\"219c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">And although startups don\u2019t have formal internship programs compared to those like P&amp;G and Unilever, you\u2019ll learn so much more because you\u2019re given real work, and you\u2019re really integrated to the company.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3a83\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_listen_to_me\"><\/span>Why listen to\u00a0me?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"e780\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">As I\u2019ve said, I\u2019ve been able to intern at 2 startups in the Philippines already\u200a\u2014\u200aKalibrr and ZAP. Both of these startups are funded by Kickstart (Globe\u2019s venture capital arm), and it\u2019s easy to say they are two of the most successful startups in the country.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1c8f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">I also know a lot of startup founders from my days organizing startup events for ASES, and I also have a lot of friends who\u2019ve interned for different startups. So I know what founders are looking for and what it takes for students to land internships at startups.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3ca0\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_this_guide_limited_to_a_specific_job_titlefunction\"><\/span>Is this guide limited to a specific job title\/function?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"4bd1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">This guide isn\u2019t limited to a specific job title. Whether you want to apply as a UI\/UX designer, graphic designer, web developer, business dev\u2019t officer, this guide should still apply to you.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c3d9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">I\u2019ve been a sales intern and web development intern at ZAP, and I was a Product Design Intern at Kalibrr, so I do have an idea on how to apply under any of those positions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8393\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">So without further ado, let\u2019s get started on the step-by-step guide!<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Create_your_shortlist_of_startupscompanies_you_want_to_apply_to\"><\/span>Step 1: Create your shortlist of startups\/companies you want to apply\u00a0to<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"540d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">The first step in landing an internship is to know what are your options.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7431\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">To do this, you definitely should create a shortlist. In this shortlist, you\u2019ll fill it up with two kinds of startups: 1) startups that are actively hiring for interns, and 2) startups that aren\u2019t, but you\u2019re highly interested to work for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bc9f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">To fill list #1 (startups actively hiring for interns), it\u2019s pretty straightforward.<\/p>\n<p id=\"00eb\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\"><strong>Method #1: Search on Job Portals like\u00a0Kalibrr<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ac19\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">The easiest way is to go on\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kalibrr.com\/job-board\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fkalibrr.com\">Kalibrr.com<\/a>\u00a0and just search \u2018intern\u2019 among their list of open jobs. When I last searched, there were 952 job matches to the \u2018intern\u2019 search term. But it\u2019s up to you to discern if any of these companies you find are interesting to work for or not.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3758\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\"><strong>Method #2: Join These Facebook\u00a0Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"f3db\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Another way is to find the \u2018Jobs and Internships\u2019 Facebook group of your university. For Ateneo, ours is called Ateneo Jobs and Internships, and lots of people post their about companies looking for interns from time to time. There should be a similar Facebook group for UP, UST, and DLSU too.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0a7f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You should also join the\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/groups\/277534272382470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2F277534272382470%2F%3Fref%3Dbr_rs\">Startup PH: Jobs<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/groups\/startupphilippinesinternships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2Fstartupphilippinesinternships%2F\">Startup Philippines: Internships<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/groups\/1226827497394592\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2F1226827497394592%2F\">Startup PH Manila: Internships<\/a>\u00a0Facebook groups to find startups actively hiring interns. There\u2019s also\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/groups\/1712315812325681\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2F1712315812325681%2F\">this FB group<\/a>\u00a0that has job posts looking for designers and web developers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a93b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">After going through the job portals and these Facebook groups, make sure you compile a list of all these companies and their job postings. You can either copy paste or screenshot these job posts into a Google Doc or Word file.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2fd8\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You could also compile them all in an Evernote notebook, especially with the\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/evernote.com\/products\/webclipper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fevernote.com%2Fproducts%2Fwebclipper\">Evernote Web Clipper<\/a>\u00a0chrome extension, which is what I do.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2279\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Now_for_the_companies_that_arent_actively_hiring\"><\/span>Now, for the companies that aren\u2019t actively\u00a0hiring<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"ec02\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">So let\u2019s say you\u2019ve finished your search, and you haven\u2019t really found a company you absolutely want to work for. That\u2019s okay too.<\/p>\n<p id=\"272b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">A lot of startups aren\u2019t actively hiring interns, and that\u2019s because they usually don\u2019t need interns. It takes work for startups to find, hire, and train an employee, so they\u2019d usually rather hire a full-time employee than an intern.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7d18\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">So where do you find startups that aren\u2019t actively hiring, but are interesting to work for?<\/p>\n<p id=\"defd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You can start by looking at\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstart.ph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kickstart.ph%2F\">Kickstart\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0portfolio of startups. I can\u2019t say all of them are interesting, but most of them should be interesting to work for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cbba\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You can also look at the recent\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ideaspacefoundation.org\/startups.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ideaspacefoundation.org%2Fstartups.html\">Ideaspace startups<\/a>. Ideaspace is a startup incubator owned by Smart\/PLDT. Here\u2019s some questions to find answers to to know if a company is worth applying to:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"77f9\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Do I understand\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">what their startup does?<\/strong>\u00a0Is it interesting to me?<\/li>\n<li id=\"cd87\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Do I understand\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">what their product is?<\/strong>\u00a0Has it launched?<\/li>\n<li id=\"1e78\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">How many people work here?<\/strong>\u00a0Do they have an office address?<\/li>\n<li id=\"026b\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">Does the company have articles about them in Google?<\/strong>\u00a0Have they been funded? Have they reached any milestones lately?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"5c69\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">Generally, you\u2019d want to make sure that you\u2019re working for a startup that has 1) been around for a year; 2) has at least five people; 3) has a beta of their product at least, and 4) has an office or co-working space where they work at.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4d85\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Startups that don\u2019t fulfill this standard are probably still figuring things out and might even close down, so it\u2019s best to make sure you find a startup that fulfills the criteria I listed above.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"e226\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_2_Narrow_down_your_shortlist\"><\/span>Step 2: Narrow down your shortlist<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"6a5b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Now that you\u2019ve made a shortlist, it\u2019s now time to narrow down your shortlist in list #1 (startups actively hiring) and #2 (startups not actively hiring).<\/p>\n<p id=\"c0c6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For list #1, it\u2019s simple. Just rank the startups based on which ones you\u2019re most interested to work for. This is where you\u2019ll weigh all the research you made above and reflect on which company you think is most exciting to work for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"40a4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you want to learn more about what a company is like, you have two main options:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option 1: Get in touch with one of the founders\/employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"7918\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">If the startup has a website, chances are they have a team page, and you\u2019ll find the names of the founders or employees there. With that, you can just search them on Facebook or Linkedin (better if you have an account already). After searching them, you can just cold-message (or cold email them if their emails are in the website).<\/p>\n<p id=\"26fd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Here\u2019s a sample message script you can use:<\/p>\n<p id=\"8f93\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Hi [insert startup founder\u2019s first name]!<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"e7b4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">This is Brian Tan, a 3rd year IT Entrepreneurship student from the Ateneo De Manila University. I\u2019m looking to get an internship in June 2018, and I\u2019m considering interning in your company.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"b2fc\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">I\u2019m thinking of interning in your company because of [insert some flattering remarks about why you\u2019re deeply interested in their company].<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"2322\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">As such, I just have two questions I\u2019d love for you to answer first: 1. Are you open to hiring a [insert what kind of intern you want to be there] from June to Aug 2018? and 2. If you\u2019re messaging an employee, then obviously you have to tweak the message a bit more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option 2: Find students who\u2019ve interned there\u00a0before<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"4d61\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">In case you\u2019re a bit scared to do option 1, then the easier option is to do option 2. However, some startups might not have had students who\u2019ve interned there before. To do this, you can try searching on Facebook, Google, and Linkedin.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e5ab\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">There\u2019s a chance that a student who\u2019s interned at a startup before made a public post about interning there. Or you could find someone who put it on their Linkedin profile.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0558\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Here\u2019s a sample message script you can use:<\/p>\n<p id=\"1d67\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Hi [insert student\u2019s first name]!<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"d237\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">I\u2019m Brian Tan, a 3rd year IT Entrepreneurship student from the Ateneo De Manila University. Would you recommend I intern there as a [insert job function you want to intern there as]<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"634d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Thanks so much!\u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5a2a\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_3_Find_a_contact_in_these_startups\"><\/span>Step 3: Find a contact in these\u00a0startups<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"a26a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Cold-messaging or cold-emailing people isn\u2019t just good for doing research for a certain company, but they\u2019re also good methods for finding contacts in startups and getting in touch with them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0aa9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Why find a contact? But thankfully, my friend Jaime knew one of the co-founders of ZAP, and he sent an email introducing me to him. That\u2019s how I was able to get him to interview me and accept me. I also got my interview and internship at Kalibrr through asking a friend I made there.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_ways_to_meet_contacts_in_startups\"><\/span>Other ways to meet contacts in startups:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"1113\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Aside from cold-messaging or cold-emailing though, there\u2019s other ways to meet contacts who can help you get internships. Here\u2019s a few ways:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"8ce0\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">Join startup conferences and events<\/strong>\u200a\u2014\u200aTo do this, just keep updated with the posts in the Startup PH FB group. There\u2019s always new conferences and events there, and a lot of them are free to join. I\u2019ve been to quite a few, and I\u2019ve networked with a lot of startup founders and employees through them. Don\u2019t be intimidated\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s okay for students to join these networking events! They\u2019ll be happy to see younger faces there.<\/li>\n<li id=\"80c7\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">Join more Facebook Groups\u200a<\/strong>\u2014\u200aThere\u2019s also other Facebook groups where employees at startups are in aside from the ones I mentioned above. One example is\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/groups\/ProductPH\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2FProductPH%2F\">Product PH<\/a>, a Facebook group where a lot of product managers in the Philippines are part of. Another is\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/groups\/uxphilippines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/r\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2Fuxphilippines%2F%3Fref%3Dbr_rs\">UX Philippines<\/a>, where a lot of designers in startups are part. Then just look at the profiles of some of the people who post and comment to see what startups they\u2019ve worked at.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"c90b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">After finding contacts at startups you want to intern for, it\u2019s time to move to step 3:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"87d8\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_4_Create_and_perfect_your_resume_and_Linkedin_profile_if_you_havent_yet\"><\/span>Step 4: Create and perfect your resume and Linkedin profile (if you haven\u2019t\u00a0yet)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"b459\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Now that you\u2019ve made your shortlist and found some contacts, it\u2019s time to create and perfect your resume and Linkedin profile.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9b66\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Any startup you apply to will ask for your resume, so it\u2019s best you make one that will impress whoever is reading it. My school, Ateneo, has a resume format that most Ateneans follow, and I\u2019ve linked it below for you to download:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0Bw-V8lqEpNgISUJoYV9VOVlzYl9qTHlTQTNnSjRsU3FZQ3lZ\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here\u2019s the guide to writing one<\/a>, made by Ateneo. And here\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1RQmpsSzcUgpJx33H0J2_-kPD8f5PMBgL\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a sample resume<\/a>\u00a0(in docx format, for you to edit).<\/p>\n<p id=\"2e6e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--mixtapeEmbed\">However, I personally don\u2019t follow Ateneo\u2019s resume template, mainly because I don\u2019t want my resume to look like any other Atenean\u2019s resume. So if you wanted to set yourself apart, here\u2019s a few things that can make your resume more unique:<\/p>\n<p id=\"70dd\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><strong>1. Put a Short Bio or Summary at the\u00a0Top<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"33c1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Instead of listing out which career fields\/industries you\u2019re interested to work for (usually you\u2019ll see Ateneans with 2\u20133 industries there), you can put a short bio instead. For example, if you\u2019re applying for a marketing internship, you could put there \u201cI\u2019m an Atenean junior who\u2019s deeply passionate about marketing and interested to pursue a long-term career in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"e0a6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Even though it\u2019s unusual, it shows to the recruiter you know what you want to do and that you\u2019re different than others. Another way is to put there a summary of your resume at the top, such as \u201cAtenean junior with 1.5 years of experience in marketing and finance roles for my orgs. Currently looking for a marketing internship to apply my skills in marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"f1e6\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><strong>2. Design Your\u00a0Resume<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"3c7e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">If you have an eye for design or know how to use design software like Photoshop, Canva, or Sketch, then you should design your resume. You\u2019ll instantly set yourself apart from other people and make a good impression on the startup. This is especially important for people applying for graphic design or UX design internships.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"633d\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_5_optional_Are_you_a_designer_or_software_developer_Make_a_portfolio\"><\/span>Step 5 (optional): Are you a designer or software developer? Make a portfolio.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"6a64\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Most startups in the Philippines are looking for designers or software developers as interns. After all, most startups here are developing websites or apps, so they\u2019d need people to design the website or collaterals for it, or they\u2019d need developers to help code and improve their product.<\/p>\n<p id=\"091d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">So if you\u2019re looking to apply as a designer or developer, it\u2019s important you have a portfolio. For designers, a portfolio can just be a PDF file where you compile 3\u20135 case studies of design work you\u2019ve done. You can describe what each project was for and show your process and designs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"89d1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Meanwhile, for developers, you can just put together a list of links of websites or apps you\u2019ve tried to develop, and send them over to the startup.<\/p>\n<p id=\"51e8\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you want your portfolio to be more presentable though, I\u2019d recommend you make one here on Medium. You can do so by making a publication and putting \u2018stories\u2019 under those publication, and each story can be one project in your portfolio. You can check out mine as an example\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/my-case-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/my-case-studies\" data->here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3bb8\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_6_Apply\"><\/span>Step 6:\u00a0Apply!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ceb6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Now that you\u2019ve prepared everything, from making a shortlist, to researching about the startup and finding contacts, to preparing your resume and Linkedin profile, now it\u2019s time to apply. If you\u2019re applying through Kalibrr or Jobstreet or through a formal job post, then just fill up the app form and send in the necessary requirements.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e363\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">But if you\u2019re applying for a startup that isn\u2019t actively hiring, then it\u2019s all about your email to them. Here\u2019s what you could use for that email:<\/p>\n<p id=\"c6c6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u201cHi [Insert Startup Employee\u2019s Name\/Startup\u2019s Name]!<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"fbc2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">I\u2019m [insert name], a [insert year level and course] student from [school name]. I\u2019m emailing you because I want to apply as a ____ intern at your company.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"9d50\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">I\u2019ve had [insert relevant experience 1, 2, and 3,]. I\u2019d also love to learn more about working in a startup and about [insert internship field] while there. I\u2019m deeply interested in your startup because of [insert reason why you\u2019re interested]. Attached below is my resume. Looking forward to your reply!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"e4b9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You can tailor this email script to your liking, but the important thing is you show these three things:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"6383\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Passion and interest for what the startup does (mention it in your email script)<\/li>\n<li id=\"ad66\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Experience and\/or interest in the field you want to intern in, and<\/li>\n<li id=\"bb20\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Your resume.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"afa3\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--li\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_7_Wait_for_them_to_schedule_an_interview_with_you_then_prepare_for_it\"><\/span>Step 7: Wait for them to schedule an interview with you, then prepare for\u00a0it!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"84c2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">If you\u2019ve gotten this far, then congratulations! You\u2019ve made it farther than most students, because a lot of startups might just ignore your emails. You can follow up though with your contact or with the startup\u2019s email around 2 times before giving up. But assuming you get this far, then you can now prepare for an interview.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c605\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The best way to prepare for an interview is to know what questions will be asked. The best way to know what questions will be asked is to research online about it, such as \u201cUX Design Interview Questions\u201d or \u201cDigital Marketing Interview Questions\u201d. If you find a question you think will be asked, but haven\u2019t prepared for, then list those down.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7844\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Here are some questions interviewers typically ask (regardless of field), and I think everyone should prepare for them (it also helps you know yourself more by answering them):<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"3de0\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Tell me about yourself.<\/li>\n<li id=\"7a2f\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Why are you interested to work here?<\/li>\n<li id=\"799f\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Why are you interested to be a ____ intern?<\/li>\n<li id=\"7127\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">What relevant experience do you have for this internship?<\/li>\n<li id=\"e088\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">What resources did you use to learn this field?<\/li>\n<li id=\"c121\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">How would you define (insert field name)?<\/li>\n<li id=\"4485\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?<\/li>\n<li id=\"041d\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">What do you want to do or work on if you work here?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"32b0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">There are a lot more common questions than these, but you can just think of them on your own. These are questions I\u2019ve been asked when I was interviewed at ZAP and Kalibrr.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6255\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">After listing down those questions, now it\u2019s important to practice answering them. You can do this by filming yourself on your webcam\/phone to check what you look and sound like. It\u2019s important to make your answers not too long and not too short, and to start and end well. Try to sound confident and impressive, but don\u2019t try to exaggerate or make up things either.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6b23\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_8_Wait_for_your_result_Rejected_Its_okay_Accepted_You_can_celebrate\"><\/span>Step 8: Wait for your result. Rejected? It\u2019s okay. Accepted? You can celebrate!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"f277\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">After your interview, it usually takes 1\u20132 weeks for you to get a result. In case you haven\u2019t gotten a result within 2 weeks, then you can just follow up with your interviewer for the result.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9f3f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you get rejected, then it\u2019s okay. Don\u2019t take it personally. Fail fast, fail forward. You can ask your interviewer why they rejected you and ask what you should do so you can be accepted the next year (or in the future).<\/p>\n<p id=\"2008\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you get accepted, then you can celebrate! All your hard work has paid off. But before you celebrate, make sure you ask all the details about your internship first, such as:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"dd4d\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">The start date and end date of the internship<\/li>\n<li id=\"7de1\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">How often you have to be at the office, and from what time to what time<\/li>\n<li id=\"31ba\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Ask if you\u2019ll be paid or not. Try to ask for a salary or stipend if you can, even just something like P4,000 a month. This will help you cover transpo and food costs while interning.<\/li>\n<li id=\"99e5\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Know what your job description and responsibilities are. Do they sound interesting, and will you learn while doing them?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"c1d4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">It\u2019s important to ask these so you know what you\u2019re getting into. Make sure it\u2019s clear that the internship they\u2019re offering you is something you can handle and want to take.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"d156\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thats_It\"><\/span>That\u2019s It!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"22d6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">So there you have it, that\u2019s my 8-step guide to landing an internship at any startup. BUT, it\u2019s not enough to just read this guide. 90% of you who read this guide will just read it and not do any of the steps here.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0919\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you really want to get an internship at a startup, you should really do the steps and tips in this article. Bookmark this, or save it on Pocket\/Evernote, and remind yourself to follow it when you start applying.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b249\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Whether it\u2019s joining those startup-related FB groups, fixing up your resume and showing it to someone, or cold messaging startup founders and employees, these are the keys to letting you get an internship at a startup.
