On Tuesday, January 9th, 2018, Kalibrr, in partnership with Indonesian Students Association Australia (Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia Australia), organized a company visit for 22 inspiring young Indonesian students to learn more about the renowned\u00a0Ciputra Group<\/a>. As students entered Ciputra\u2019s DBS Bank Tower 39th floor lobby, they were guided through the hallowed hallways of the head office, lined with miniature models of their iconic properties. One which caught most student\u2019s attention was the CitraLand City Losari model — a large scale residential complex planned to adopt the shape of the mythical Garuda in Makassar, South Sulawesi.<\/p>\n

Many students were pleasantly surprised by the open space office, painted in bright colors and artistically furnished, with freely flowing conversations between everyone there.<\/div>\n

During the tour, students had the opportunity to meet several of Ciputra\u2019s incredibly welcoming employees. One of whom was Cipta Harun, Ciputra Group\u2019s General Manager of Business Development, that took a moment to share about their culture. \u201cWe believe that everyone must have the same level of ownership. It\u2019s this lack of rigid bureaucracy that made Ciputra\u2019s rapid growth possible.\u201d When asked by one student about the most challenging issue that still remains unsolved even to this day, Cipta readily answered, \u201cAffordable housing.\u201d This statement rings true to most Indonesians, particularly the younger generation, for whom owning a house seems beyond their means. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Indonesia needs between 800,000 and 1 million houses per year, but the slow wage growth has yet to catch up to the rise of property price–making housing out of reach for many buyers.<\/div>\n

\u201cHousing projects require high capital requirements, but yield small profit margins.\u201d Cipta acknowledged. \u201cHowever, it is Ciputra Group\u2019s vision to enhance the nation\u2019s quality of life, and we\u2019re committed to providing opportunities for everyone to have homes.\u201d This year alone, Ciputra Group is launching new apartment projects in Bandung, West Java and Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta, and another one in Surabaya, East Java on their heels. Addressing this problem is an arduous journey, as Cipta admitted that complications in permit and land acquisition have resulted in delays in construction. But history has proved Ciputra Group resilient to such stumbling blocks, as proven by their ability to bounce back from the 1997-1998 economic crisis through a series of loan restructuring and go on to experience a quantum leap. Over the past three decades, Ciputra Group has successfully developed more than 97 projects in 33 cities and even expanded to Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. \u201cThis success is fully attributable to our people guided by our core values, namely integrity, professionalism, and entrepreneurship.\u201d The University of Southern California graduate went on to share that as a company, “there will always be a room for inspiring ideas and committed talents. There will always be challenges that present a chance for growth.”<\/div>\n

Ray Franklin Dixon, President of PPIA of University of Melbourne, was left with a deep impression after the company visit. \u201cAs someone who has a keen interest in the property industry, this event gave me great firsthand insights into how a company survived hardships and developed through the years to become one of the biggest names. I\u2019m also made of aware of the many obstacles the country is struggling with. Knowing how much an impact each individual can make, I\u2019m very eager to jump in and help solve the problems.\u201d\u00a0Echoing the students\u2019 sentiments, Kalibrr team were grateful to share in the learning and insights. There is a rapidly evolving tide of change in how Indonesian companies view themselves, their customers and most importantly their people, which is creating a very promising future for meaningful work in the country.<\/div>\n
