Intelligent<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s an adjective that can be filed under the category, \u201cWords that you want people to say about you, but that you don\u2019t want to say about yourself\u201d\u00a0(yes,\u00a0even if you were the graduating batch\u2019s top finisher or have the transcript to back it up).<\/p>\n<p>Alternatives: Use words that describe\u00a0the way a person thinks. Examples include \u201clogical\u201d, \u201cquantitative\u201d, \u201cfast learner\u201d, or \u201cbig-picture thinker.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Likable\"><\/span>2.\u00a0<strong>Likable<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>(See previous explanation on the word \u201cintelligent\u201d).<\/em>\u00a0Imagine what you would answer \u2013 and the manner in which you would answer \u2013 if the interviewer asked, \u201cCan you cite instances that you were likable?\u201d Alternatives: Use words such as \u201cteam player\u201d, \u201coutgoing\u201d, \u201centhusiastic\u201d or \u201ccaring\u201d and back them up with examples. Give \u201caction-oriented\u201d answers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Successful\"><\/span>3.\u00a0<strong>Successful<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By using this word to describe yourself, will you be able to substantiate how successful you are? It\u2019s similar to using \u201crich and good-looking\u201d to describe one\u2019s self. You may be successful in one aspect but you still can&#8217;t use this word.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatives:\u00a0Zero in on an account of success on a more specific skill. Highlight your skills and capabilities relevant for the job, which is necessary to land the job. \u00a0You have the license to say that you\u2019re good at what you do.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Obsessive\"><\/span>4.\u00a0<strong>Obsessive<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If it\u2019s your objective to look for a word that would capture how passionate you are, get a word that has no negative implication. Alternatives: Use words like \u201cfocused\u201d, \u201cdetail-oriented\u201d, \u201chard working\u201d or \u201cdedicated\u201d, which gives am idea of how you can be so dedicated on the task \u00a0at hand.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Humble\"><\/span>5.\u00a0<strong>Humble<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI am the most humble person out there\u201d sounds a bit weird and contradictory. Don\u2019t back yourself into a corner by using this as a description\u00a0and trying to talk your way out of it. Alternatives:\u00a0If this is really something you want to get across in an interview, go with the \u201cshow, don\u2019t tell\u201d strategy:<\/p>\n<p>Discuss what you did, the succeeding result, and what others thought. Let your interviewer do the evaluating. Even the great Buddha warned us about this 20 years ago when he said, \u201cWhatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who knew that the Buddha was also an esteemed career counselor?
