In a <strong><span style=\"color: #3399cc\"><a style=\"color: #3399cc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2957901\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study across 75 countries<\/a><\/span>, <\/strong>they\u00a0found that using\u00a0cues\u00a0of nervous behavior to detect lying is unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>Professor\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/video\/3166586123001\/trustworthy-signals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">DeSteno\u2019s experiments on trustworthy body language<\/a> <\/strong>found that a set of four cues, taken together, seems to indicate deception, and should be what you should look out for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>hand touching<\/li>\n<li>face touching<\/li>\n<li>arms crossing<\/li>\n<li>leaning away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Watch_out_for_verbal_cues\"><\/span>Watch out for verbal cues<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In their review of\u00a0the research on lie detection,<span style=\"color: #3399cc\"> <strong><a style=\"color: #3399cc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologicalscience.org\/publications\/journals\/pspi\/pitfalls-and-opportunities-in-nonverbal-and-verbal-lie-detection-2.html#.WHLpKLZ94Vw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0found that there is no word\u00a0(or nonverbal cue) that is directly related to someone lying. However, there are behaviors that were found to be correlated with lying:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>They are being too vague\/provide few details<\/li>\n<li>They are contradicting<\/li>\n<li>Their answers or responses are overly scripted and chronological<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, the research say that trying to detect whether a job candidate is lying during an interview is difficult and probably not\u00a0really worth the effort.
