How To (Finally) Ask Your Office Crush Out on a Date

We’ve all been there before. When you hear their voice, your head spins in their direction. When you catch them walking to the copy room or canteen, you make up an excuse to go there. There are also those little mental debates you have about asking them out, should I or shouldn’t I? Well, you’re in luck because Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and that gives you the perfect excuse to finally ask them out. We don’t have to tell you that dating a colleague might mean a series of dates with HR…but if you think the feeling and the connection is too real to ignore, why not? Happy Valentine’s, office lovebirds!

1. Dress to impress and make them think “yes”

You don’t have to go out and get your Fred Perry on. Looking good doesn’t have to cost you big bucks. Think SCHAVE. Shower (because hygiene is sexy), coordinate your outfit, fix your hair, and, specifically for the guys, shave to get yourself cleaned up (or not, if the look for you). For good measure, dab on some cologne or spray some perfume before you leave the house. First impressions count, and you’ve got less than 24 hours to make it happen.

2. Revisit your bookmark of your crush’s Facebook profile

Don’t pretend you don’t have it saved somewhere. Sift through the likes and history of events. By studying your crush’s interests and keeping up to date with the happenings around town, you can hope to anticipate when and where they’ll be out, and know the things that they like. And may be you can…

3. “Bump” into your crush

“Oh, hey, I totally didn’t realize you’d be having lunch here, too!” Sure, you totally didn’t mean to “bump” into them at their favorite restaurant (which you may or may not have known from his tweets/Facebook updates/Instagram posts). When he/she sees you there, their lightbulb will go off that this person from work likes the things I like, too. And just like that, you have laid the foundation of your relationship.

4. Small talk is your friend

Now that you’re within the same space as they are, say hi, or simply ask “what’s up?” You don’t need to ask them out right there and then. Use the small talk to get your crush to smile or laugh.  That should warm them up before you spring the big question.

5. E-Flirt

No luck in bumping into your crush? Don’t worry, you’re in the digital age now. Send GIFs, punny messages, and articles that you are both interested in. Link videos, funny videos. And if you’ve got the ball rolling: chat. Just try not too be too eager. You want to be cute, not clingy and desperate.

6. Just ask!

No matter what you do, if you don’t ask, you’ll never know. Steps 1-5 won’t matter at all if you don’t muster up the courage to actually ask the person out on a date. While we hope things go well for you, life doesn’t always turn out the way we want it to. If your office crush says “no” to your proposition, sulk a bit, be a little bit awkward, and then move on. Just like the job search — don’t get too hung up on a rejection when there are plenty of other opportunities for you out there.
