Yesterday, April 16, was a big day for the University of the East, as they held their 67th Yearend Commencement Rites at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. Congratulations to the graduating college students of UE Manila and UE Caloocan! Founded in 1946, the University of the East continues to be one of the top universities in the Philippines.

The renowned university has churned out its share of accomplished alumni. In honor of their graduation, we’ve put together a list of the most successful and inspiring UE alumni:

“Kabayan” Noli de Castro

A radio and TV newsreader and commentator by profession, de Castro was elected Senator in 2001 and Vice President in 2004. He is the first independent candidate to receive the highest number of votes in a Philippine senatorial election and the first elected Vice President of the Philippines to run independently.

Robert Jaworski

A former Philippine senator, basketball coach and Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) and Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) basketball player, Jaworski is known as “The Big J” and called “The Living Legend” during his playing days. In 2000, he was honored as one of the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players of All Time.

Alfredo Lim

Lim is a Chinese-Filipino politician who served as Mayor of the City of Manila from 1992 to 1998 and 2007 to 2013, and senator of the Philippines from 2004 to 2007. He also served as a policeman for three decades and was appointed as the Director of the National Bureau of Investigation during the administration of President Corazon Aquino.

Christopher de Leon

A multi-awarded Filipino film actor, de Leon has appeared in over 120 films since the early 1970s and earned the nickname “Drama King” for taking on several challenging dramatic roles.

Xian Lim A Chinese Filipino actor, a model, and a singer, Xian is a contract artist of Star Magic. He was once a part of UE’s varsity basketball team and has gone on to earn several awards this early in his showbiz career.

Quinito Henson

Quinito is a PBA commentator, popular sports columnist, and broadcaster. Nicknamed “The Dean” for his scholarly approach to the game, he has covered five NBA Finals on site for Philippine TV. Quinito has also received several awards, including the first-ever Olympism Award from the Philippine Olympic Committee for excellence in journalism.

Andrew Tan

Andrew is a Chinese-Filipino billionaire with business interests in real estate, liquor and fast food. In 2011, Forbes magazine rated him fourth on the list of “the Philippines’ 40 richest” with an estimated net worth of $2 billion.

Manuel Lopez

Manuel is the Current Chairman of the Board of the Lopez Group of Companies, Director of Benpres Holdings Corp., Chairman of Meralco, Chairman of the board at Rockwell Land, Director of among others, ABS-CBN, MNTC, Sierra Tours, FPIDC, FPHC, BayanTel, Sky Vision and Lopez, Inc.

Virgilio “Rio” S. Almario

Rio is a National Artist for Literature and better known by his pen name, Rio Alma, a Filipino artist, poet, critic, translator, editor, teacher, and cultural manager. He spearheaded the second successful modernist movement in Filipino poetry.

George Canseco

George was a song composer, musical director for films, and President of the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers of FILSCAP in 1973.

Janina San Miguel

Janina is a Filipino beauty queen who was crowned Binibining Pilipinas World at the Binibining Pilipinas 2008 beauty pageant. During their graduation day, students were reminded of their accomplishments over the course of their university life. These famous alumni also remind them of what lies ahead – that they too can forge a path of success and meaning in their unique way with hard work, dedication, and a commitment to serve others. Onwards and upwards, batch of 2015 UE graduates! Here’s to more future successes ahead!
