21st Century Recruiters
With the ever-changing landscape of career and recruitment, the traditional ways of interviewing and assessing candidates need to be upgraded. LinkedIn has mentioned in the past that recruiters in modern times have evolved into a hybrid of scientists and artists because of their nouveau techniques. According to a 2016 infographic about the 21st Century recruiter, these HR professionals are dubbed as part-scientist and part-artists because of certain approaches to different kinds of recruits.
Part-scientist
On the scientist side of the coin, recruiters utilize different techniques to determine if a candidate is the best fit for their company. One of these techniques is utilizing the data made available to them. They are dubbed “data nerds” as they believe that validity comes with numbers and validity builds trust. They are also called “researchers” by expanding their knowledge on candidate pools and recruitment trends to stay up to speed with the competition. Being called “technologist” has its perks as this means that they’re knowledgeable with the best and latest tools of recruitment. Finally, they are also named “psychologists” due to their skill of reading the candidate, inspiring them, and motivating them as well.
Part-artist
Separating from the technical side is the artist counterpart of the recruiter. They have an innate instinct for a mutual connection, navigating skill sets, and have the capacity of hiring managerial personalities, that’s why they’re called “matchmakers”. With the way they think about jobs as products they are selling as the “marketer”, they construct a great story through their own profiles or employer branding. Having the people and negotiation skills makes them fitting for the title of “salesperson” while providing information on critical talent trends and having a seat at the table where all the big decisions are made earns them the namesake of “talent advisor”.
The 21st Century Recruiter

HR professionals have a variety of skills and talents to make sure that their company’s hiring needs are met and expectations are exceeded. In an update by LinkedIn in 2018, they reimagined the 21st Century Recruiter as cognitively augmented. Shifting from being part-artists and part-scientists, recruiters have discovered other important components of hiring by being “Talent Influencers” and “Talent Scientists”. As Talent Influencers, they utilize their personal brand to be digitally and socially eminent to attract top-quality talent. By being Talent Scientists, they combine the science of data with the art of sourcing using best practices in psychology and AI algorithms.
Furthermore, they decide the best practices in recruitment with the help of AI to make sure that they find the right talent for their company. To attract applicants, they use they are masters in social selling with design thinking, crafting meaningful stories, and healthy company culture.
