Balance is Key: How to Balance Part-time Work and a Full-time Job

Taking on multiple roles has become the norm in this day and age. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, people have been career cushioning–or finding a safety job in case of an unforeseen emergency endangering their work. Especially in light of recent layoffs and retrenchments, many employees have been opting to not only have a full-time job but to pursue part-time side hustles alongside what they primarily do.

It is inevitable for employees to experience fatigue, burnout, and general struggles that have to do with time management as a whole. Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered with these little bits of advice to help you balance your different careers.

Tip #1: Create boundaries between jobs

The tendency for many employees that take on more than one job is for them to multitask or even merge the responsibilities. For instance, they might work on their sideline while at the office for their main job. As much as possible, try to plan your days around what is prioritized. Maybe you can even designate an area in your workspace for one job just so you can draw the line between the two.

Tip #2: Make sure both employers are aware

Before even considering taking on another job, make sure to check your existing contract. Some companies do not allow their employees to work another job without disclosing the nature of the profession – especially for potential competitors. Consult with your boss or supervisor on the guidelines for working for another employer.

Tip #3: Try out freelancing

Freelancing can give you an opportunity to gain more skills in your passions and to earn from gigs. You have the option to work on your own time and handle your own clients, as well as your profit made. This can also serve as your time to explore and be more creative with your career path.

Tip #4: Make a list of priorities

Be it through journaling or jotting down your notes, try to carve out time to reflect on your priorities. Is it funds, career goals, passions, or something completely different? Regardless of what it is, do identify them so you know how to plan your schedule and work around your priorities moving forward. This will help you establish your goals as well.

Tip #5: Find a hobby

As much as it is important to work, it is also important to balance out the hustle with simple and fun play. Maybe try out a new sport, hit the gym, grab an instrument, or pick up a new form of art. Try to find something non work-related to help you unwind and reset for each work week ahead of you.

Whether you have been working for a long time or are new to certain industries, one thing is for certain: you are amazing for taking the initiative when it comes to career goals and securing opportunities. The future in the career world is something we cannot foresee. The most unexpected of things can happen. But, the fact of the matter is that you are trying. You’ve got this!
