4 Life Lessons Being a Working Mom Has Taught Me
Being a working mom at 23 is challenging, to say the least. I have to balance my time between my son, my social life and of course, work. Working is something I can’t afford to lose. Some people work to earn a living and some are lucky enough to get paid to do what they are passionate about. I get to talk to lots of people everyday, organize events, share ideas, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s easy to love what I do, and I must say, I am one of the lucky ones.
I work because I love it, but not as much as I love motherhood. The best thing about being a mother is that loving becomes easy and effortless. But it doesn’t guarantee that everything else is smooth sailing. There are days when you just want to stop and quit. Life moves too fast and no matter what you do, it seems like you can’t keep up. You’re not alone. As a working mom, I’ve learned a thing or two about finding balance in my life and whether or not you have kids, these are worth trying.
TOPICS
1. Have a checklist
I always have a checklist that’s categorized in 3 different ways: Mother, Employee, Friend. These categories are the main roles I play in my life. Whether it’s meeting with a client or spending time with my son, I make sure that all my responsibilities of being a mother, an employee, and a friend are being fulfilled. When you have to balance multiple roles, having a checklist can help you focus on your goals and reach them.
2. Set your priorities straight when it comes to $$$
Most people my age only have to worry about themselves but I’m earning a living for two. Paying tuition fees and buying baon for school are just a fraction of the costs that you need to prepare for. It’s important to organize all the expenses you have and take note of when each one is due. This can be very helpful for budgeting your resources.
3. Learn how to say “no”
Going out for drinks after office hours is common in the workplace. You will get weekly invitations for this or that gimmick but you have to think about more than just yourself or what you want to do. If you know you can’t afford to go out or your child is waiting for you to get home, just look away and say no. Make the right sacrifices.
4. Treat yourself every once in a while
Every hard working mom deserves to feel like a queen every now and then. Go to a spa, have a drink with your friends or go on a trip! I’m sure even your kids would want you to pamper yourself sometimes. Trying to make a living is hard enough but being a mother is even harder. If you’re on the fence about it, go ahead. Treat yourself. 😉
Choosing between your personal life and work is never easy—that’s why we shouldn’t.
