Nowadays, learning the proper skills on how to advance your programming career is not only possible through formal schooling. With the advancement of new technologies, we’re now able to access information from all around the world — information that we can get as long as we have a device and a Wi-Fi connection.

With all these new possibilities, it’s important to maximize the opportunities given to us. Especially when you’re in the programming industry, you constantly need to upskill and review the different fundamentals to advance your career. You don’t even have to pay for these opportunities as you could take some of them for FREE!

If you’re a programmer looking to take your tech skills to the next level, here are 3 online resources that you could use!

#1: The Odin Project

Founded in 2013, The Odin Project (TOP) is a FREE and HELPFUL resource that you could use when you’re starting in web development. If you’re more experienced and you already have a career in programming, you can still use this resource to help you review your basic programming fundamentals without spending a single cent!

TOP was built on the philosophy that “education should be free and accessible.” With that, it aims to provide high-quality web development training to people who can’t seek paid learning opportunities.

The TOP course includes learning all about the basics of web development and other programming languages such as JavaScript. The course includes an exhaustive run-down of all the essential tools you’ll need to succeed in a web development career.

The project is very much you-oriented. The project provides its users with guides on how to go about the different frameworks and processes of web development. However, it still ensures that you’re able to learn by actually letting you work on projects by yourself. Instead of just simply spoon-feeding you information, the course gives you the chance to practice your skills so you end up learning something.

#2: CS50x

CS50x is Harvard University’s online introductory course to computer science. Though this is a Harvard course, students from other universities and different parts of the world can access this for FREE using the edX website.

What this course will give you is an in-depth discussion on topics that include “abstraction, algorithms, data structures, encapsulation, resource management, security, software engineering, and web development.” It will also teach you how to code using multiple programming languages  such as C, Python, SQL, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. Aside from this, the course will also give you relevant and real-world examples from different fields such as finance and data analytics where you could apply what you’ve learned.

Perhaps the most important thing that you would learn from this course is how to think like a programmer. You will be equipped with the necessary skills to analyze problems and give robust solutions to them. In a competitive job market, it’s important to master these skills so you could eventually land that job offer!

Aside from this introductory course, there are dedicated classes on Python and other programming languages. Feel free to browse through their curriculum on the edX website!

#3: How to Code: Simple Data

How to Code: Simple Data is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) introductory course to programming. However, instead of the students learning about how to properly use programming languages, the course takes a “…unique approach as it focuses on learning a systematic programming method.

You will learn different programming techniques such as “developing program requirements, producing programs with a consistent structure that is easy to modify later, and making your programs more reliable by building tests as an integral part of the programming process.”

Overall, these are some of the FREE courses and resources that you could use to your advantage! Especially if you’re a beginner and you still don’t have a clue about whether programming is for you, it’s important to dip your toes first into resources that won’t hurt your wallet.
