It’s the season for college applications!

Most high school students dread this moment as it’s the start of their journey toward uncharted territory. After all, you’re comfortable with your high school’s environment that you find yourself afraid to be situated in a bigger school composed of different people.

There’s also the fear of filling out those college application forms. At your young age, you’re now tasked to make a big choice that will start the next chapter of your life: deciding on your college degree. You probably know that choosing the wrong course is not the end of your college life, but it still does not change the fact that this is a very stressful situation! What more if you don’t have a clue on what your career path should look like? or more specifically, what industry you want to enter?

However, there exists a group of students who already have an idea of what path they wish to take.

If you’re one of them and you’re interested in starting a career in marketing, here are 4 courses that you could TAKE in college!

Course #1: Marketing (Marketing Management, Entrepreneurial Marketing)

It’s in the name of the course itself. A degree in marketing will help you land a role in the marketing industry.

Having a degree in marketing can help you understand the different established theories and tools which can make you a successful marketer. These tools will help you describe, assess, analyze, and provide creative recommendations for different business problems. With this knowledge, you can begin to effectively use the frameworks you learned in school in your future marketing role!

Any business degree can help you gain perspectives on different aspects of business such as marketing.

With a degree in Business Management, Business Administration, or Management, you will be exposed to different learning opportunities. These opportunities will also equip you with frameworks that you can apply in practical business situations.

Take note that since these courses are geared toward giving their students a “general” perspective on business, most universities will offer their students the opportunity to select different specializations. Some universities even offer Marketing subjects or electives!

Course #3: Linguistics or Literature (English)

As the world gets more and more connected, knowing how to properly use English, a global language, also gets more important. Thus, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in English can help you equip yourself with the necessary skills to participate in a global community across different industries.

However, take note that there are many kinds of English degrees, all focusing on different aspects and uses of the language. For example, some universities offer programs such as English Language Studies, and some also offer Literature (English). The bottom line is that these courses will still provide you with training on how to critically use English in different situations.

Being an English undergraduate can help kickstart your marketing career as many companies rely on the usage of English to operate their businesses and reach their customers. Thus, fluency in both written and spoken English is key to a company’s success. Having an excellent command of the English language can also help you stand out from the competition. Once you graduate from college and you’re now starting to look for a job, make sure to demonstrate your fluency!

Course #4: Communication

Everyone is familiar with communication as all of us use it in our daily lives. However, not everyone knows how to receive and convey messages effectively.

A communications program will offer you knowledge, skills, and training on how you can truly communicate with anyone from anywhere. As a communication student, you will be an asset to a company as you understand the different communication processes. In a digitalized world, communicating effectively with your colleagues is critical.

This program will also make you become more analytical of different important social issues that stem from a misleading usage of language. You will be exposed to different case studies that will hone your creativity in finding solutions to the world’s greatest problems through using new forms of communication.

Because of this, having a degree in communication will help you in kickstarting your marketing career. The end goal of marketing is for the company to reach its target audience and convince them to purchase its products and services. The company will realize this goal through effective communication. Thus, your training in your college course will help prepare you for how to write, speak, and listen professionally — all of which are essential in a marketing career. No wonder why communication majors are sought-out in the market!

Overall, these are just some of the college courses that can help you start your marketing career. To view Philippine universities that offer these degrees, feel free to browse through these websites:

However, remember that learning does not end in school. To be a successful marketer, you should expose yourself to different experiences that will expand and ground your knowledge in real-life marketing situations. Thus, having a marketing, management, communications, or English degree is not the only path to success.

Marketing is a very dynamic industry that constantly changes. The marketing of today is not the marketing of yesterday and the marketing of tomorrow. So keep learning, keep reading, and keep pushing.
