The Only Resume Template You’ll Ever Need

A resume is used by companies to see what you can do for the company. It isn’t supposed to be your life story; it’s a sales pitch to your future boss to convince them to hire you. Thus, it’s important to not only write a meaningful resume, but also to make it look clean. Otherwise, you’ll end up annoying recruiters who don’t have time to look at messy resumes.

While there is no one magic resume format to get you a job, here are some guidelines you can follow to make sure yours will get noticed. These guidelines will hopefully help your resume on top of the stack…and not in the trash bin. And if you need more help, we’ve got a resume template you can use in your job applications at the end of this article.

1. Make sure your resume is appropriate for the job you are applying for.

Customize your resume according to the job you’re applying for. For example, if you’re applying for a job in IT, make sure your resume contains your experiences in that area. Don’t include anything that isn’t relevant to the job.

2. Substance over style.

Designing your resume won’t really matter unless you’re applying for a job in visual arts. The most important thing is to present your skills and experiences properly in your resume.

3. Prioritize accomplishments over responsibilities.

Employers care about what you’ve done, not what your title is. When listing experiences, be sure to emphasize what you did in your position and the results of your work, and not simply why it’s important or “cool.”

4. Keep your resume short and straight to the point.

Don’t pad your resume with information. Instead, keep it within 1-2 pages. Companies get hundreds of resumes everyday, and if you make your resume too long, recruiters might just not bother with reading it at all — especially if it’s all fluff.

5. Organize your resume into relevant sections.

Label the parts of your resume, such as your experience, education, etc. to make it easy for recruiters to find the information they need. And don’t ever put in your bio-data information like weight, marital status, or birthday, unless required by the employer.

6. Do not lie (obviously).

Lying on your resume can get you fired from the job if you were lucky enough to be accepted. Worse, it can ruin your reputation if other employers find out about it. Be sure that all information on your resume is true.

Below is the resume template to help you get a head start on looking for your perfect job. Good luck!
