What Is Facebook’s Favorite Interview Question?
There’s only a handful of people in the world today who haven’t heard of Facebook, the world’s largest social network. For a platform that creates genius avenues for content, but none of the actual content, they have skyrocketed themselves into the big leagues of innovation. The 12 year old company, through it’s 1.6 billions users, has created for itself a brand that is so iconic that other company’s have aspired to pattern their work environments after it.
So what is it about Facebook, as a company, that draws people to it? How do those on the inside keep doing what they’re doing and winning the game of the industry? How do they find the best people? Miranda Kalinowski, global head of recruitment, lets us in on the tech powerhouse’s favorite question to ask at interviews. Though it isn’t a required question, she does reveal that it’s popular in people operations because of how well it gauges a candidate’s fit with the company.
“On your very best day at work — the day you come home and think you have the best job in the world — what did you do that day?”
No fluff or trick questions here. Interviewers at Facebook say that they are looking for a genuine expression of pride and purpose and that’s what the question is designed to bring out. By asking how they spent a really good day, recruiters are able to get a glimpse of not only the drive and values of candidate’s but their potential to grow and learn.
Oftentimes, interviewers like to pepper their questions with unnecessary nonsense and useless misdirection in the hopes that this or that technique will become their signature and differentiator. Beyond doing a background check of their Facebook profiles, it might also be a good idea to revisit what profile we want of our future employees and what questions will help uncover these characteristics or qualities. As schooled by Facebook, simplicity and smarts are more than enough for you to filter through candidates.
